Dentures and Partial Dentures

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Two types of dentures are available: complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of a person’s teeth are missing, whereas partial dentures are used when some natural teeth are still remaining.

How Are Dentures Made?

The denture development process requires several appointments over approximately three to six weeks. After determining what type of denture is best for you, the staff at North East Dental Arts will create a series of impressions to ensure a custom design and fit. In addition, our Doctors will take measurements of how your jaws relate to each other, as well as how much space is between them.

Once we’ve taken the appropriate measurements, we’ll create a temporary model in the exact shape of the denture to be made. To provide the perfect fit, you’ll try these models several times. As necessary, North East Dental Arts will make adjustments as needed, until your dentures have a natural look and comfortable fit.

What Do Dentures Feel Like?

New dentures may feel strange or loose until the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to keep them in place. It is not unusual for minor irritation or soreness to occur and for saliva flow to increase when you first start wearing dentures, but these problems diminish as the mouth adjusts.

Eating with new dentures will take a little practice for a few weeks. To get used to the process, start by cutting soft foods into small pieces. Using both sides of your mouth, be sure to chew slowly, and progressively add additional foods until you return to a regular diet.

Caring For Dentures

Proper denture care is vital for the health of your dentures and your mouth. Like natural teeth, dentures must be rinsed daily to remove food and plaque, and they must also be cleaned with a denture cleaner. Only products with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance are recommended since they have been evaluated for safety and effectiveness.

Never attempt to adjust or repair dentures yourself and never bend any part of the clasp or metal attachments, as this can weaken the overall structure. Contact North East Dental Arts if:

  • A denture breaks
  • A denture cracks
  • A tooth chips
  • A tooth becomes loose

Often, the necessary adjustment or repair can be made the same day. However, if your denture requires complicated maintenance, it may have to be sent to a dental lab.

Over time, dentures will need to be relined, rebased, or remade due to normal wear and natural, age-related changes in the face, jaw bones, and gums. Our doctors recommend yearly oral exams for fit, sore spots and oral cancer screenings.
