Prevention & Good Oral Hygiene

Dr. Nuhfer and the staff at North East Dental Arts believe that prevention is always the best treatment. Anyone, at any age, can experience tooth decay. Factors such as diet, lifestyle, and certain medical conditions can increase your risk. Dr. Nuhfer and the staff at North East Dental Arts will advise you about nutrition, fluoride, mouth rinses, supplements, and effective brushing and flossing techniques to lower your risk of tooth decay.

Good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings are your best weapons against tooth decay and gum disease. During every appointment at North East Dental Arts, Dr. Nuhfer will evaluate your oral health, and check for subtle, early signs of trouble. Tooth decay or gum disease can be treated easily and effectively in the earliest stages.

In between visits to North East Dental Arts, there are steps that you can take to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems.

These include:

• Brushing thoroughly at least twice a day and flossing daily
• Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals
• Using dental products that contain fluoride including toothpaste
• Rinsing with a fluoride mouth rinse if suggested by your dentist

How To Brush Your Teeth

How To Floss Your Teeth

Dr. Nuhfer recommends using a toothbrush with soft bristles. Toothbrushes with medium or hard bristles can wear away tooth structure over time. Patients should also replace their toothbrush at least every three months or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Dr. Nuhfer advises patients to look for the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal on toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, mouth rinses and other oral hygiene products. The ADA Seal is your assurance that it has met ADA criteria for safety and effectiveness.
